Why One Health Cadet?

The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us of the importance of having a robust public health system. The pandemic has also highlighted the critical need for a coordinated approach between human, animal, and environmental health. In the current scenario, it is imperative to establish a One Health Cadet Corps, which can serve as a platform for youth engagement in this field. The One Health approach recognizes that the health of humans, animals, and the environment is interdependent. Therefore, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness of these systems to prevent and control the spread of diseases. The establishment of a One Health Cadet Corps can serve as a platform to train and engage the youth of the country in the field of One Health.  

The National Cadet Corps (NCC), Medical Cadets, and the Bharat Scouts and Guides have provided a platform for youth engagement in national development activities. Similarly, a One Health Cadet Corps can play a crucial role in training and educating the youth about One Health principles, thereby creating a new generation of leaders and advocates for the One Health approach.

The One Health Cadet Corps can comprise students from different disciplines such as medicine, veterinary science, agriculture, and environmental science. The students can be trained in various aspects of One Health, including disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, risk communication, and control measures. The cadets can also be trained in environmental conservation, animal welfare, and disaster management. 

The One Health Cadet Corps can work in collaboration with government agencies, NGOs, and local communities to create awareness about One Health principles. The cadets can conduct community-based programs such as health camps, vaccination drives, and awareness programs on zoonotic diseases. The cadets can also work in collaboration with veterinary clinics and hospitals to provide support during disease outbreaks.

The establishment of a One Health Cadet Corps can also help address the shortage of trained personnel in the field of One Health. The cadets can be trained to provide support during disease outbreaks, thereby reducing the burden on existing healthcare systems.
